In December 2012 Network Rail appointed BAM Nuttall as the main contractor for the delivery of the new Borders Railway. The £220m contract included detailed design and construction works for the new line.

The Borders Railway, which re-entered service in 2015, re-established a passenger rail link for the first time in over 40 years from Edinburgh through Midlothian to Tweedbank. The line included 30 miles of new railway incorporating 3 existing and 7 new stations.

We were awarded the contract of design, manufacture and supply of 10 structures ranging from precast culverts and portal structures to large spanning Banagher W-Beam bridges. We also provided all associated parapets, wingwalls, headbeams and retaining walls.

The A720 precast portal frame was the first Banagher Precast Concrete designed portal frame with a ball and socket joint to be approved for construction in the UK. All of the detailed design was done in house by our team of experienced engineers and it followed on from working on similar portal frame structures on the N22 Tralee Bypass and the N21 Castleisland Bypass both of which were constructed by BAM.
